Often referred to as “the cradle of golf”, the Old Course at St. Andrews Links was the site of all major golf tournaments in 1672, and has since remained one of the host golf courses of The Open Championship of Golf. The first Open Championship of Golf was held on 17 October, 1860, at Prestwick Golf Club, and was won by Willie Park Sr. Eminent back-to-back Open Championship winners include Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods.
The Open Championship is held at any of nine host courses annually and in rotation. These host courses include Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links, Muirfield, The Westin Turnberry Resort, Royal Troon Golf Club, Royal St George’s Golf Club, Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Golf Club, Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The 2008 championship was hosted by the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, and was won by the Irishman, Padraig Harrington.
