All eyes on golf

By challengersclub2008

The first recorded golf-like game was played with a stick and leather ball on 26 February 1297 in Holland. However, Scotland is credited with the birth of the modern game as two 15th Century Acts in the Parliament prohibit the game. In Scotland originated the first 18-hole golf course and club with membership, as well as the first set of golfing rules. The first tournament developed in Scotland and competitions were held between clubs, cities and later countries, leading to the spread of golf to England and other neighbouring nations.

Today, golf’s presence is felt in every corner of the sporting world. Post-Tiger Woods, the sport has been receiving more and more attention, especially in America. In 2005, world-renowned magazine Golf Digest stated that there were approximately 32,000 golf courses all over the world, of which half were in the United States. Adults and children alike are taking up the game, once reserved only for the elite.
